AOMCHS Background

The Alpharetta & Old Milton County Historical Society has been dedicated to preserving the rich history of Alpharetta and the former Milton County since its founding in 1979. Originally established as the Old Milton County Historical and Genealogical Society, the organization was incorporated in 1980 under the name Alpharetta, Old Milton County, Georgia, Historical and Genealogical Society. In 1994, it was re-incorporated as the Alpharetta & Old Milton County Historical Society, Inc., reflecting its enduring commitment to historical preservation. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Society plays a vital role in collecting, preserving, and sharing accurate historical records and artifacts. Through educational programs, exhibits, and community outreach, the Society ensures that the legacy of Alpharetta and Old Milton County is accessible to present and future generations.

The Alpharetta & Old Milton County Historical Society is guided by its motto "Preserving the Past, in the Present, for the Future." Its collections of Alpharetta and old Milton County historical and genealogical information have been recorded, archived, and kept alive at the historic Mansell House and Gardens, and are available for the public to view. The Society continues to grow and gather more historical material as it becomes available.

The mission of the Alpharetta & Old Milton County Historical Society is to promote an interest in and the study of history, genealogy, and related fields as it collects, assembles, preserves, and disseminates historical and genealogical information related to Alpharetta and old Milton County for the benefit of its members, their descendants, and the public.

Research Library & Archives

The Research Library and Archives provide public access to information on the history of Alpharetta, old Milton County, and local genealogy. Our collection is housed in the basement of the Log Cabin at 210 Milton Ave, across from the former Old Milton High School. AOMCHS workers and volunteers are typically present on Tuesdays and Thursdays. To submit inquiries or schedule research appointments, please email aomcharchives@gmail.com.

Family Histories

Our holdings include more than 200 family histories, mostly of those with roots in Alpharetta, Old Milton County, and surrounding areas. This collection will continue to grow as Society members and research patrons donate genealogical papers.

Milton County Records

All Milton County records have been digitized. These include Deeds with full index, Wills, Marriages, Support, Homestead, as well as Superior Court, and Court of Ordinary Minutes. Milton County existed from 1857 to 1932; however County records from 1857 to 1867 were destroyed in a courthouse fire. Federal census records for Milton County from 1860 through 1930 are available, as are census records for Cherokee County from 1850 through 1920 and Forsyth County from 1850 through 1920.

    The Mansell House and Gardens can be rented from 10 am to midnight.

  • Can I bring in my own caterer?

    Yes, outside caterers are allowed.

  • Can I bring in my own alcoholic beverages?

    Yes, please contact the City of Alpharetta for a liquor permit.

  • Do you have a kitchen and what equipment is available?

    Yes, (2) refrigerators, (1) stove, (1) microwave, kitchen sink and a caterer’s entrance.

  • Do you have tables, chairs, and other equipment?

    Yes, (60) black padded metal folding chairs, (5) 8’ tables and (4) 6’ tables. Any other

    equipment, such as a tent or white folding chair, can be rented from an outside

    company.

  • Do you have a location outdoors for a tent?

    Yes, tents are permitted on the patio and can be rented from an outside company.

  • Do you have electricity outdoors?

    Yes, the gazebo and arbor have electrical outlets.

  • Do you need to clean up after an event?

    Yes, our basic philosophy is to leave it the way you found it
